Avalon Church exists to
MAKE DISCIPLES WHO MAKE DISCIPLES.

It’s what Jesus calls us to do

What is a DISCIPLE?

In Jesus day, a disciple didn’t just learn from his rabbi. It was about imitation. Disciples walked so closely with their rabbi that they began to think, act, and live like them. The apostle Paul expressed it this way, “For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son…”. --Romans 8:29 (CEB)

Following Jesus means:

  • Knowing him

  • Embracing his teachings

  • Living out his ways of love, humility, service

  • Partnering with God’s mission to bring his restoration and life to others.

This was God’s design from the beginning of Creation (Genesis 1-2), living out God’s will and God’s kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. This is the work God restored in Jesus, yet it’s a work only possible through the transformed heart that comes through Christ.

Living it out in Big and Small Church

In the book of Acts, we see how the earliest communities of Jesus’ followers lived.

All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.... They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. –Acts 2:42-47 (NLT)

Throughout the New Testament, we see Jesus’ communities living out their faith in both large and small gatherings. We call this Big Church and Small Church.

Big Church is the large gathering that typically includes buildings, resources, staff, and volunteer leaders who organize and manage ministries such as Sunday services, classes, mission trips, youth and kids ministries, and benevolence efforts. Big Church plays an important role, especially in Western culture. It is important, but not enough.

Small Church is a small community of people gathering together as family. They can meet in homes, restaurants, and other spaces within the surrounding community. Together, the group shares the responsibilities of living out “Church”: worship, community, and mission. Small Church is built on mutual participation within authentic, accountable relationships. It is a space for fostering deep friendships, eating together, meeting each other’s needs, growing together, and living out their specific mission together to BLESS others in Jesus’ name.

OUR BELIEFS

GOD

There is one true and living God. He is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three persons – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit – each of whom possesses equally all the attributes of Deity and the characteristics of personality. He is indescribably awesome in holiness and worthy of all possible obedience, honor and love.

Gen 1:1,26-27; 3:22, Psalm 90:2, Matt 28:19, 1Pet 1:2, 2Cor 13:14.

THE BIBLE

The Bible is God’s written story revealing his purpose for Creation and his interaction with Creation. The Scriptures are inspired by God and are true and trustworthy to guide people toward Christ and to grow in Christ.  It is the authority for Christian belief and behavior.

2Tim 1:13; 3:16, Pet 1:20-21, Ps 12:6; 119:105; 160.

JESUS

Jesus Christ is the virgin born Son of God. He is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a completely sinless human life in thought and deed. Jesus voluntarily offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice by dying for the sins of all people who will trust in Him for salvation. On the third day, Jesus conquered sin and death through his resurrection from the dead.

Matt 1:22-23, Isa 9:6, Jn 1:1-5; 14:10-30, Heb 4:14-15, 1Cor 15:3-4, Rom 1:3-4, Acts 1:9-11, 1Tim 6:14-15.

HUMANITY

Humanity is the supreme object of God’s creation. Man and woman together were made in the image of God. They were created sinless but voluntarily chose to disobey God and forfeited their state of innocence. As a result of the original sin all people are now born with a sin nature and therefore separated from God.

Gen 1:27, Ps 8:3-6, Isa 53:6; 59:1-2, Rom 3:2.

HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son. He is present in the world to make people aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. The true Christ follower seeks to live under His control daily.

2 Cor 3:17, Jn 16:7-13; 14:16-17, 1Cor 2:12; 3:16, Eph 1:13; 5:18, Gal 5:25, Acts 1:8.

THE CHURCH

The Church is the community of believers who share a common faith in Jesus Christ, commitment to the Scriptures, and follow Christ’s commission to make disciples throughout the entire world. The Church is intended to be a preview of what God’s Kingdom looks like on earth as they worship and grow together, care for one another, and bless the world.

Acts 2:41, 47, Matt 28:19-20, 1Tim 3:15, Philippians 1.

SALVATION

Salvation is a gift from God to humanity. No one could ever make up for their sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God’s offer for forgiveness can anyone be saved from the penalty of sin. Eternal life begins the moment a person receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith.
